Kathryn Clay has written more than 40 nonfiction children’s books about everything from dancing to dinosaurs. She also teaches college writing courses. She has a Master’s of Arts in Literature from Minnesota State University, Mankato. Kathryn lives in southern Minnesota with her husband and daughter.

Lacking Information -- To Be Expected

My son's in kindergarten and really enjoys books. For some reason he almost always picks out these type of books from the non-fiction section. I've seen BMX, lowriders, hot rods, motorcycles, football, and many others brought home in his backpack this year. I was surprised and excited to see him pick out Cool Hockey Facts this week. But I've seen so many of these type of books I knew what I was in store for. Like the other reviewer, I too find it mostly void of hockey facts. The information it does have, from Gretzky to Zambonis is no more than a couple of sentences. Sadly, as a hockey fan, it followed the pattern as all the other type of non-fiction books I've seen come home from my son's school library this year. One nice thing about the book as it did have some great photography. I especially enjoyed the Gretzky 801st career goal scored on Arturs Irbe (Irbe was my favorite). I remember watching that game and it was a nice to see that again. There's a pretty sad looking picture of Derek Boogaard on the page before that. I needed something to smile at after that.
Overall, this is a decent book for a young kid (4-6) who knows very little about hockey. Many of the photographs are nice and there are some interesting things a kid might enjoy to know (like frozen pucks). Not much for young hockey fans... but good for kids who might not know much about the game. I'll give it 3 stars.

Thought it was going to be better than it was...

I bought this because my Sons love hockey. I thought it was going to have a lot of cool facts about the sport. I was extremely disappointed. Not only was the book short, but it had facts that everyone knows. One being that if a player hits another player, it's considered a penalty. I was expecting something completely different than what it was. I returned it for a refund.
