Malcolm Richards writes mystery suspense fiction focusing on everyday people placed in extraordinary circumstances.
Born and raised in Cornwall, UK, Malcolm has worked as a reading recovery teacher, a nuture group leader teaching children with complex behavioral and emotional needs, and as a teacher of creative writing.
His debut novel, The Hiding House, is a darkly woven fairy tale for adults, and has been praised for both its storytelling and its realistic portrayal of children.
Malcolm lives and writes in South East London.

Interesting..........

Right off the bat I have to say that this is a very hard book for me to rate. For me it is probably a 3 1/2 but I am giving it a 4 because I am just not sure what to think. I love murder mysteries and this book is different from that genre. It is a mystery story (sort of.....) but not one that you have to finish ASAP because you HAVE to know what happens.
It starts off with two children who are living with their grandmother & she dies right off the bat. The children's mother is MIA so they don't know what to do. They are afraid of telling anyone she died because they have no one else to go live with except their mother's brother who the granddaughter does not want to live with.
There are many flashback stories that explain the situation with their mother, etc. I don't want to give anything away so I will end it there. Let's just say a lot of the book deals more with the children's predicament than a great mystery (although the mother is a mystery as well as a mysterious stranger that either is a figment in the little boy's imagination or he is real).
There is swearing so if you don't like it in your books it is there, although it is appropriate and just not for the sake of swearing. There is also some talk of sexual abuse so if you don't like that subject you might want to pass on this book. It is certainly not graphic though or discussed a lot.
I will definitely check out any other books by this author.

Genre: Mystery and Thriller, Adult Fairy Tale
Four years ago, Elise, now age 12 and her brother Sebastian, now nine, were placed in the arms of their loving grandmother. After suffering abuse from an alcoholic self-centered mother for years, they were dropped at the "hiding house" in the woods by their unstable mother. She never returned. The children have felt safe and loved since that time, grateful for the home cooking and tender care.
One hot summer afternoon, Nana May suddenly dies. She is found seated on her porch by the children when they return home. Fearing foster home placement and separation, the children hide her body. Due to the isolated location, they keep quiet about the death and continue with their lives as usual. The ongoing grief from the loss of their grandmother and the stress of hiding their secret begins, however, to take a toll on Elise and Sebastian. Now, out of the dark woods surrounding the house, comes new terror.
Excerpt from the book:
The shadow moved closer. It pressed its face against the glass. Sebastian stared in horror as the door handle began to turn. Sebastian leapt from his chair and slammed into the kitchen door. He scrabbled for the key, twisted it and heard the lock snap in place. Taking a step back. he watched as the door handle moved up and down, and then was still. The shadow at the door remained unmoving.
"Will you let me in?" it rasped.

Rollercoaster Ride

Slow at start to a satisfying end. Some parts were a reach from our reality but it's a good escape and that is what is good about some novels. Definitely a rollercoaster ride in the emotions that Elise and Sebastian had. From a mother who abandons them to the secrets they realize.
