The study guide to a great book is very confusing!!

The problem with this study guide (and the concept is good, fill in the blank, multiple choice questions, and discussion questions) is that the questions that we are told go with each chapter of The Believer's Authority book, don't. Questions for Lesson One that go along with chapter one have questions that can only be answered if you have read chapter two. (ex: "Authority is delegated _______" Answer is on page 10 in chapter two) Questions to be answered for chapter 2 are from information in Chapters 3, 5 and the last page of the book. I suppose it would be fine for self - study when you would probably be able to answer the questions from having read the entire book but I wanted to use this for a Connect Group that would meet weekly where we would do one chapter at a time. I can see everyone getting totally frustrated. So I will make up my own questions for each chapter, which defeats the whole purpose of purchasing this as a possible resource for my group.

4 "Harry Potter Who?" Stars

I think that if "Harry Potter" and "The Chronicles of Narnia" were to get it on and nine months later pop out a little by product, "Akarnae" would be it. In this debut novel by Lynette Noni, part one in a five part series, "Akarnae" weaves a tale of magic, intrigue, fantasy, hidden secrets and fun that enraptures and delights, hooking you from page one and leaving you screaming for more at the end.

Alexandra "Alex" Jennings is not your average sixteen year old teenager. With archeologists as parents, Alex has bounced from place to place with them, never staying in one place long enough to really make friends or create a social life for herself. All that changes though, when her parents are offered a once in a lifetime job opportunity and are forced to leave her behind for the next eight months, leaving her all alone for the first time while also starting a new boarding school. Starting a new school is nothing new to Alex, but when on her first day things go terribly awry and she finds herself in a new world, nothing could prepare Alex for the surprises in store for her.

This book captured my attention from the very beginning and kept me captivated until the end. A lot of fantasy young adult novels are very hit or miss for me. I have come across so many that read incredibly too juvenile for my taste and cannot hold my attention, while others can be too mature in content and lack the juvenile innocence one looks for while reading it. Neither of those were a problem in this book and Ms. Noni does a fantastic job of creating loveable characters that you find yourself wanting to go on this journey with. I cannot wait to see how Alex and her "gang" mature through this series at the same time waiting to see what mischief they get into next.

Overall, I say that you definitely need to put this book on your to-read shelf. It is so fun and entertaining without being too predictable or immature. Though listed as a YA novel, I think this book is age appropriate for anyone, there is not any content that I found too violent or "R" rated, but there is just enough chemistry and content to keep it entertaining. My only complaint that I have about this book is that it's over and I don't have my hands on Raelia (The Medoran Chronicles #2)!! I want.

Awesome!

The evening I finished Akarnae I sat down in front of the fire to write, unordered thoughts swirling in my head.

Do I go with the, “It’s like Harry Potter mixed with X-Men and The Chronicles of Narnia” quote? Can I describe the pure awesomeness of Alex without giving things away? Characters, focus on characters. No friendships? The ways it’s better than typical young adult fantasy? The fun alternate world? The fantasticness that it is the first of a series…

Stymied by my enthusiasm, I decided to start at the beginning – the title.

People are going to need to know how to pronounce the title so they can find it and then tell all their friends about it.

I pulled the book out and started skimming through the first chapter knowing the phonetic spelling was hiding in it somewhere. Soon the skimming turned to reading, the pronunciation forgotten, and before I knew it I’d read the first quarter of the book again.

Would I recommend it?

Just in case that wasn’t clear, let me tell you again. The evening I finished the book I sat down and accidentally re-read the first quarter of the book- after reading the entire thing in less than two days.

I really liked this book and, because I know you’re still wondering, it’s pronounced Ah-kar-nay.

Now you can go find it, tell your friends about it and then, this is the really important part, after you read it tell me so we can sit down and talk about all the things that make it awesome!

What a fascinating story!

Stepping into different worlds - check
Discovering gifts - check
Awesome friends - check
Wonderfully stable MC - check
Intriguing plot - check, check, check

At first, my mind decided to do a Harry Potter comparison, but I was pleased when it turned out to be something more. It is a mix of everything I enjoy, and I really had a wonderful time reading it.

Alex, Jordan, and Bear's friendship and adventures were great. I didn't want to stop reading, nor did I want the book to end. Lynette Noni built a fantastic world and combined it with a kick-ass plot. She also gave every character a distinct "voice", which is something I really liked.

I recommend reading this book.. A definite must read.

Now, can we please get book #2? :D

About the Author

Victoria Scott, Ph.D., MBA, is a community psychologist who has devoted her professional career to working with non-profit organizations to optimize their performance through consultation, training, research, and evaluation.  She is actively engaged with the Society for Community Research and Action (SCRA), Division 27 of the American Psychological Association, which is a national organization devoted to strengthening communities around the world through theory, research, and action.  Dr. Scott is especially passionate about improving the quality of health care and health care outcomes. She holds an academic appointment at the University of South Carolina where she is both a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Neuropsychiatry and Behavior Science and Director of Research & Evaluation at the Office of Continuous Professional Development and Strategic Affairs. Dr. Scott is blissfully married to her best friend, C. Justin Scott, and mother of their beautiful daughter, Vienna.

Susan M. Wolfe, Ph.D. is a community and developmental psychologist with over 28 years of professional experience. She has worked across a variety of settings that include public hospitals, a community college district, a public school system, universities, research institutes, and the federal government. She has worked across topic areas such as domestic violence, homelessness, education, adolescent development, maternal child health, technological innovation, children’s mental health, nursing homes, and policy. She is currently CEO of Susan Wolfe and Associates, LLC where she provides research, evaluation, capacity building, and coalition development services to non-profit organizations, government, foundations, school districts, and public health organizations. She has a diploma from the Michigan College of Beauty Culture, a Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical/Community Psychology from the University of Michigan-Flint, a Master of Arts degree and ABD in Ecological Psychology with a cognate in Organizational Psychology from Michigan State University, and a PhD in Human Development and Communication Sciences from the University of Texas at Dallas. She lives in Cedar Hill, Texas with her husband, Charles Hipkins. Her family includes two sons, two-stepsons, two daughters-in-law, a granddaughter, three grandsons, a Chihuahua, a Chiweenie and two cats.

Inspiring and a great read

Excellent book that completely shifted my perspective on how thinking influences our daily lives. Kudos to Shukla for her engaging voice and thoughtful writing style (and that she packed so much information into a relatively slim volume). I find that I keep referring back to parts of the book even after I finished. Inspiring and a great read.

Magnificent!

Ms. Shukla’s book is one of the best books I’ve ever read! I’ve had the benefit of learning from many wonderful books by Deepak Chopra, Wayne Dyer and Eckhart Tolle among others, and Shukla’s work clearly belongs in such good company. While many of Shukla’s teachings will sound familiar to travelers (like me) on a holistic spiritual path, her book is unique and quite special in its own right. The book focuses on explaining the 1D, 2D and 3D dimensions of our minds and teaches how each of us can optimally access, focus and balance these with positive energy in our unique life’s mission. Yet the book’s scope is much broader than the mind itself. It inspires and guides each of us toward our highest human potential. In essence I feel this is a book of great life wisdom – one which combines timeless teachings of the world’s spiritual traditions with practical application to the extraordinary challenges and opportunities of today’s world. I think it is rare to see such expansive and insightful teachings expressed so concisely (200+ pages), organized so brilliantly, and expressed with such clarity and elegance in a modern work. I have a young son, and if I had to pick just a few books to share with him in his adolescent years or later when trying to understand himself and chart his life’s journey, this would definitely be one of them. I think Shukla has written a classic, and I hope over time the world will regard it as such so that millions of people may benefit from its wisdom.

Excellent and inspiring; a book I return to when looking to clear my mind and deepen my understanding of start up challenges

I very much enjoyed reading this book and highly recommend it to anyone curious about the mind, interested in relationship dynamics (both personal and professional), or pursuing an entrepreneurial venture. For me, reading this book was meditative in that Amita's approach to thinking about the mind allowed me to gain deeper insight into my current business venture and relationships. Since completing the book, I have occasionally flipped back to certain chapters to refresh/reset my approach and understanding of challenges of the moment (of which there are many at a start up). I've found that rereading Amita's reflections reveals new insights depending on my current situation. I'm sure that I will keep the book in my office for reference in the future when searching for inspiration or a way to clear my mind and shift/broaden my focus.

While Amita's approach to the mind is very useful for managing challenges of a start up company, it is also extensible to the navigation of numerous other situations - conflict, negotiation, building/managing relationships, etc. I have recommended this book to co-workers, family, and friends as I believe there is something to be gleaned by everyone.

Earth Surface Processes by Philip A. Allen is a great book!!! Very useful!!!

He does a nice working linking physical processes to sedimentary process. If you are taking Sedimentology at a middle or upper lever you want to take a look of this book.
