In considering the postwar decline of American liberalism, historian Brinkley moves from FDR and JFK (liberals by everyone's definition) to such figures as Huey Long, Oral Roberts, and a succession of foreign-policy shapers, including the Dulles brothers, Dean Rusk, McGeorge Bundy, Robert McNamara, and Cyrus Vance. Many readers will wonder what liberalism is if this disparate group can all claim the label. Brinkley sorts it out capably, referring along the way to such fellow historians and intellectuals as Richard Hofstadter, Arthur Schlesinger Jr., George Soule, Jordan Schwarz, Theda Skocpol, and James MacGregor Burns, among hundreds of others cited in more than 50 pages of notes. Both learned and readable, these provocative essays will interest all those who still admit to being left of center. Interestingly, two of the best essays are about the hazards of writing history. A collection of insightful, but ultimately disparate, essays

These 17 essays are wonderful when read individually. All are elouqent and insightful (as you would expect from Brinkley), especially the biographical ones such as "The Passions of Oral Roberts", "Robert Penn Warren, T. Harry Williams, and Huey Long," and "The Rise of Franklin Roosevelt." "Icons of the American Establishment" features a wonderful biography of Henry Stimson and readers will enjoy the chapters about Allard Lowenstein and Richard Hofstader.
Nonetheless, readers should be aware that most of this material is not new, as Brinkley explicity states in the introduction. Most of these essays have been published before in one form or another

Not what it purports to be

This book is well written, compelling, and has plenty of insights for those hoping to understand the political history of liberalism in America since the Great Depression. Unfortunately, it does not follow any unifying narrative, but rather, as a collection of essays, jumps from topic to topic in a somewhat disjointed manner. This left me unsatisfied. Each essay in itself was interesting, but I did not come away from this book with any sense of the greater picture. For example, the final chapter of the book is a critique of historians and their work that is more appropriate to an introductory college history class than a book about "Liberalism and Its Discontents." The bottom line: check out some of the essays in this book that interest you, but don't be fooled by its title.

People of the 'L' word

Tracing the archaeology of liberalism the tale of its discontents is the autobiography of the primordial lockean and his pilgrim's progress since Roosevelt onwards. Like deviations around the mean, the grumblers and near party linears receive a series of shaggy dog stories for their spicy 'deviations'. I went to library looking for Ruggiero's History of Liberalism but came home with this instead, more fun. Lately, the number of shaggy dogs is increasing exponentially given the Bush regime and the discontents could mutate into malcontents. Meanwhile liberalism lumbers ever onward, an ism that has taken more torpedoes than most, yet without sinking.

These 65 pieces and 6 etudes are originally found in Ferdinando Carulli's "Complete Method For The Guitar, op. 241". This method is the last iteration of his original guitar method (op. 27), the first modern method for guitar. Originally published as "44 Progressive Pieces and 6 Studies", the present edition (based on an edition published by Oliver Ditson Company, Boston) in fact yields the following: 56 numbered studies, 2 slur studies, 1 rondo for all positions, 4 interval studies, 2 studies in harmonics and the 6 (rather didactic) etudes. (Not included in the present volume are numerous short scale exercises and cadences. These can be found in more complete and thorough treatments in numerous modern methods.) These studies clearly demonstrate Carulli's familiarity with his Italian operatic heritage. They are nearly all in recognizable song forms and the compositional style is simple melody with harmonic accompaniment. Counterpoint is almost totally absent. Yet within these limits Carulli creates very fine music indeed. Great care was taken to make this a performing edition. All of the pieces fit on 1 or 2 pages. The few that take 3 pages have page turns inserted in logical places. The few fingerings presented are found in the Ditson edition and are logical and obvious. It is hoped that these pieces will present a delightful and useful supplement to the studies of Sor and Giuliani published during the same period. They are truly progressive; the first 10 or so are in the keys of C, G or D (and their relative minors), all in first position, using mostly tonic and dominant harmony and can be learned by most students in just a few lessons. They continue to increase in complexity and difficulty through the final 16 (studies 41-56), which are some of the most delightful music written for guitar. New Ideas on Rome's Urban Plan

Roads and Ruins does all that, and well. Going beyond the standard interpretations of Fascism's controversial interventions in Rome's landscape, historian Paul Baxa links Mussolini's road-building programs--and the Fascist enthusiasm for speed and open space--to the horrific experience of Italian soldiers in World War I, when hundreds of thousands of troops faced confinement and death on the Carso, above Trieste. And that's for starters. Borden Painter's Mussolini's Rome is also excellent--and yes, it has photographs, which Baxa's book does not--but readers interested in these issues should have both. Roads and Ruins is engagingly written, entertaining, and consistently provocative. Highly recommended.

Inisightful..but no sights...

An interesting but rather dry and theoretical study of the ideologies; influences; and war time experiences that underpinned the Fascist rebuilding of Rome. A total lack of illustrations makes it difficult to imagine what the author is talking about. To speak of the "liberation" of the Capitoline Hill and the Theater of Marcellus from "medieval clutter" without any photographs "before and after" is in my opinion a glaring omission hard to explain. Anyone thinking this book might a practical "vademecum" for a tour of Rome should look to Borden Painter's "Mussolini's Rome" rather than this one.

The study guide to a great book is very confusing!!

The problem with this study guide (and the concept is good, fill in the blank, multiple choice questions, and discussion questions) is that the questions that we are told go with each chapter of The Believer's Authority book, don't. Questions for Lesson One that go along with chapter one have questions that can only be answered if you have read chapter two. (ex: "Authority is delegated _______" Answer is on page 10 in chapter two) Questions to be answered for chapter 2 are from information in Chapters 3, 5 and the last page of the book. I suppose it would be fine for self - study when you would probably be able to answer the questions from having read the entire book but I wanted to use this for a Connect Group that would meet weekly where we would do one chapter at a time. I can see everyone getting totally frustrated. So I will make up my own questions for each chapter, which defeats the whole purpose of purchasing this as a possible resource for my group.

4 "Harry Potter Who?" Stars

I think that if "Harry Potter" and "The Chronicles of Narnia" were to get it on and nine months later pop out a little by product, "Akarnae" would be it. In this debut novel by Lynette Noni, part one in a five part series, "Akarnae" weaves a tale of magic, intrigue, fantasy, hidden secrets and fun that enraptures and delights, hooking you from page one and leaving you screaming for more at the end.

Alexandra "Alex" Jennings is not your average sixteen year old teenager. With archeologists as parents, Alex has bounced from place to place with them, never staying in one place long enough to really make friends or create a social life for herself. All that changes though, when her parents are offered a once in a lifetime job opportunity and are forced to leave her behind for the next eight months, leaving her all alone for the first time while also starting a new boarding school. Starting a new school is nothing new to Alex, but when on her first day things go terribly awry and she finds herself in a new world, nothing could prepare Alex for the surprises in store for her.

This book captured my attention from the very beginning and kept me captivated until the end. A lot of fantasy young adult novels are very hit or miss for me. I have come across so many that read incredibly too juvenile for my taste and cannot hold my attention, while others can be too mature in content and lack the juvenile innocence one looks for while reading it. Neither of those were a problem in this book and Ms. Noni does a fantastic job of creating loveable characters that you find yourself wanting to go on this journey with. I cannot wait to see how Alex and her "gang" mature through this series at the same time waiting to see what mischief they get into next.

Overall, I say that you definitely need to put this book on your to-read shelf. It is so fun and entertaining without being too predictable or immature. Though listed as a YA novel, I think this book is age appropriate for anyone, there is not any content that I found too violent or "R" rated, but there is just enough chemistry and content to keep it entertaining. My only complaint that I have about this book is that it's over and I don't have my hands on Raelia (The Medoran Chronicles #2)!! I want.

Awesome!

The evening I finished Akarnae I sat down in front of the fire to write, unordered thoughts swirling in my head.

Do I go with the, “It’s like Harry Potter mixed with X-Men and The Chronicles of Narnia” quote? Can I describe the pure awesomeness of Alex without giving things away? Characters, focus on characters. No friendships? The ways it’s better than typical young adult fantasy? The fun alternate world? The fantasticness that it is the first of a series…

Stymied by my enthusiasm, I decided to start at the beginning – the title.

People are going to need to know how to pronounce the title so they can find it and then tell all their friends about it.

I pulled the book out and started skimming through the first chapter knowing the phonetic spelling was hiding in it somewhere. Soon the skimming turned to reading, the pronunciation forgotten, and before I knew it I’d read the first quarter of the book again.

Would I recommend it?

Just in case that wasn’t clear, let me tell you again. The evening I finished the book I sat down and accidentally re-read the first quarter of the book- after reading the entire thing in less than two days.

I really liked this book and, because I know you’re still wondering, it’s pronounced Ah-kar-nay.

Now you can go find it, tell your friends about it and then, this is the really important part, after you read it tell me so we can sit down and talk about all the things that make it awesome!

What a fascinating story!

At first, my mind decided to do a Harry Potter comparison, but I was pleased when it turned out to be something more. It is a mix of everything I enjoy, and I really had a wonderful time reading it.

Alex, Jordan, and Bear's friendship and adventures were great. I didn't want to stop reading, nor did I want the book to end. Lynette Noni built a fantastic world and combined it with a kick-ass plot. She also gave every character a distinct "voice", which is something I really liked.

I recommend reading this book.. A definite must read.

Now, can we please get book #2? :D

About the Author

Victoria Scott, Ph.D., MBA, is a community psychologist who has devoted her professional career to working with non-profit organizations to optimize their performance through consultation, training, research, and evaluation. She is actively engaged with the Society for Community Research and Action (SCRA), Division 27 of the American Psychological Association, which is a national organization devoted to strengthening communities around the world through theory, research, and action. Dr. Scott is especially passionate about improving the quality of health care and health care outcomes. She holds an academic appointment at the University of South Carolina where she is both a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Neuropsychiatry and Behavior Science and Director of Research & Evaluation at the Office of Continuous Professional Development and Strategic Affairs. Dr. Scott is blissfully married to her best friend, C. Justin Scott, and mother of their beautiful daughter, Vienna.

Susan M. Wolfe, Ph.D. is a community and developmental psychologist with over 28 years of professional experience. She has worked across a variety of settings that include public hospitals, a community college district, a public school system, universities, research institutes, and the federal government. She has worked across topic areas such as domestic violence, homelessness, education, adolescent development, maternal child health, technological innovation, children’s mental health, nursing homes, and policy. She is currently CEO of Susan Wolfe and Associates, LLC where she provides research, evaluation, capacity building, and coalition development services to non-profit organizations, government, foundations, school districts, and public health organizations. She has a diploma from the Michigan College of Beauty Culture, a Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical/Community Psychology from the University of Michigan-Flint, a Master of Arts degree and ABD in Ecological Psychology with a cognate in Organizational Psychology from Michigan State University, and a PhD in Human Development and Communication Sciences from the University of Texas at Dallas. She lives in Cedar Hill, Texas with her husband, Charles Hipkins. Her family includes two sons, two-stepsons, two daughters-in-law, a granddaughter, three grandsons, a Chihuahua, a Chiweenie and two cats.
