Welcome back, Creasy. In the sequel to Quinnell's tour de force _Man On Fire_, no time is wasted in setting the stage for ex-mercenary Creasy's latest project. His wife and baby happen to be on a flight to the States: Pan Am 103.
Creasy creates a project plan and executes it in sequential, ever-escalating fashion: exacting brutal, fitting revenge on the terrorists and organizations who killed his new family.
Quinnell represents the pinnacle of true-to-life espionage and 'wet work'. As this is a pen name, the true identity of AJQ is a mystery to most. Suffice it to say, he knows his business.
As I wrote in the review for _Man On Fire_, there is no better author in this genre than Quinnell. It is tragic that his books are (mostly) out of print in the U.S. It has taken many months to buy his out-of-print and new (via international) books and I've finally assembled the full collection of Creasy and non-Creasy stories.
All of them are five stars, period.

Another sentimental and tour-de-force read!

Amongst the passengers on Pan Am 103, which was blown up in the sky over hte small Scottish town of Lockerbie in 1988, were the wife and 4-year-old daughter of a man called Creasy: a VETERAN & a MERCENARY. Creasy vows to seek his own vegeance, and to this end he needs the back-up of power and of youth. He therefore enlists a US Senator--whose wife also died on that flight--and ruthlessly trains an 18-year-old orphan into becoming a man in his own image....
As usual, Quinnell used news bylines to develop and evolve it into a wonderful story. THE PERFECT KILL is a modern day version of Charles Brownson's movie, THE MECHANICS, but in more deep carvings. Very profound yet with wordless feelings that we could find in his MAN ON FIRE and SNAPSHOT of the genre. The script is clear-cut and concise, fast paced with no hesitated linger-around or rigidarity. A PERFECT READ, as usual, Mr. Quinnell, whoever you are.

A wonderful long overdue sequel to MAN ON FIRE

Rarely a writer could be so integrate like Quinnell who could put romance, love, loyalty, adventure, professionalism, friendship and heroism into one book and made the sequel on a par with its prequel, but Quinnell always did and always could deliver. I wish many readers could find this unfarely overlooked great writer with simple style but profound sentimentals. Creasy in MAN ON FIRE not only lost his beloved wife and daughter this time, but also created a second-coming youngman of his own, Michael Said, the orphan from Malta, might be worth developing into a great character of his legacy in the future novel?

Truly incredible!

I can't stress enough what a great anthology this is. Some amazing works are displayed, and though I am (was) not familiar with any of the authors here, there are a couple of stories that I believe are worthy of being called masterpieces.
For those looking for a jolt of raw horror, "The Road to Mictlantecutli", a classic tale of morality set against the desert of New Mexico, "Camera Obscura", about an introverted millionare's fastenating title device, "Party Games" about a not-so-innocent [...] child, and "The Knife" will fit the bill nicely.
Those looking for terror in the form of monsters need look no further than "It", a novellette about a highly-eveloved mold spore (written, fastenatingly, from the monster's perspective) "FishHead", a nasty little tale straight out of a Southern bayou, "Men With No Bones",and the bizarre "The Troll". Those who are looking for subtly-crafted tales will find pleasure with "One of the Dead" about a haunted house amongst the Hollywood mansions, "X Marks The Pedwalk", a disturbing tale about urban violence (apparently set in the future), "Not With a Bang",a post-apocalyptic tale with an ending that will leave you thinking, and the disturbing and strangely sad "A Death in the Family", about a man with a gruesome surprise in his basement.
If you like a dash of humor with your horror, the hilarious
"Tough Town", about a traveling salesman who gets a grim surprise after abscently striking a man's dog, and "The Canidate", about an organization working towards one common good--the death of a single, hated individual.

Now I would like to adress a few tales that I believe are true masterpieces: "Journey to Death". This story, about two men stranded in a tiny, air-sealed room in a sunken cruiseliner, is one of the most disturbing stories I have ever read, right up their with Stephen King's "Survivor Type". Then there is "Casablanca", a story that takes the reputably beautiful city and shows it in a disturbing, alien light. The final sentence of this particularly long short story is simply unforgettable.

The book concludes with the very good novel "Out of the Deeps", an interesting take on an alien invasion story. This novel is intelligent, but never allows for the suspense to drop. Recommened for late-night reading.

Of this entire volume, the only stories I can honestly say didn't really do anything for me were "Guide to Doom", "Two Spinsters", "The Kage", and the overlong "The Curious Adventures of Mr. Bond".
These four stories do absolutely nothing to hinder the otherwise excellent stories. The ratio of sucky-to-non-sucky (forgive my crudeness) stories is truly remarkable.
This is a very rare book, and one that sadly is widly unknown.
As another reader here has mentioned, it is a sin that a book this good is out of print.
Now--stop reading, and order this book. From Amazon, Ebay, wherever, I don't care. Just get it. You will never regret it.

Makes any "stranded on a desert island" list - a must have!!

This anthology is one of the most chilling and creepy collections of gothic horror and the supernatural. Quite incredibly, it is very unknown and hard to find.
I can still smell the thick, slippery river mud of "Fishead". The stark and surreal horror of "The Troll" is like the Twilight Zone episode with William Shatner. And why the novelette "Out of the Deeps" hasn't been made yet into a summer sci-fi blockbuster on par with Star Wars escapes me.
This is a must-have book for those who like a good scare. Get some cookies, make some tea, lock the door, and be sure to leave a nightlight on...you can't look away from this book once you pick it up. The 1-star rating above is CLEARLY a typo on the reviewer's part.

A Definite Must Read!!

I am the mother in law to this young lady, and I can tell you that her experience told within this story in one that needs to be told in order to make others aware of the dangers our children can face in any given situation. This book is a definite must read for all parents. Amanda Farmer is a very brave young lady, who has put her ordeal out there, so others can learn from her experience.

Abused. Faith. Grace. Redemption.

The Preacher's Pet is a remarkable book about a courageous young woman ABUSED in a way no child should ever experience. The Preacher in the book betrayed her, the community and God and tested her FAITH in unimaginable ways. Amanda's kind heart guided her away from a life of pain and drove her into the arms of one of my best friends, Ed. She has experienced so much in her young life, but most importantly she has experienced God's GRACE and REDEMPTION.

In my opinion, the Farmers are one of the best American families I have ever known. This book is about their journey to become the incredible family they are today and the dangers a young American woman faced growing up. The Preacher's Pet is Amanda's story, but I feel like it can touch any American's heart. Amanda wrote the book as if she was sitting right next to you holding your hand, laughing, crying, and patting you on the back the whole time. I read the book cover to cover in four hours and then went online and bought three more copies.

I know many people that have read this book and I don't think one of them made it through it without crying. If you read the book Amanda will take you on an emotional ride through her life. You'll meet people you will want to have a beer with, people you will want to hug and people you will want to strangle!

Extremely touching story

I couldn't put this book down. You start reading and just have to know what happens next. It left me in tears in some parts but mostly it left me touched. As a children's coordinator in church this book gave me a new take on the importance of safety in church and protecting our children. Church should be safest place in the world for a child to be. For those that are abused I think this book will offer hope. This is an emotional story to read but one that needs to be read.

Critical monetary theory

This is an important book that breaks down the "currency" part of the financial system in easy to understand details. It is a critical read for anyone interested in the concepts behind money and currency. It is also a nice history lesson that dates back to the 1870s. I don't normally read books that are over 100 years old, but this book is a critical piece of financial history.

If you are thinking about purchasing this book, you are searching for the truth about money and banking. This lost gem contains a wealth of knowledge about how money worked under our original constitutional system. It is available in the public domain on archive websites, but a printed copy is valuable. This author published another book called "The Book" after the Fed was established. It is also a very important read.

This book exposes the important truth that the Dollar was a weight and measure of silver and the Eagle was our weight and measure of Gold under the original coinage act. It was never meant to be changed. It was a both a weight and a measure and a standard. Money is the very lifeblood of society. It is amazing how many of the USA's current problems stem from this departure from the Constitution and the amazing system that the people who founded this country set up.

Also Google, McFadden an astounding exposure, LBJ's comments on the signing of the 1965 coinage act, Jefferson's opinion on the Constitutionality of a National Bank, and finally find a picture of the back of a series 1914 Federal Reserve note and read the fine print. You will start to see the truth. It is shocking when you understand what has happened. Consider that all banknotes were redeemable for silver coin until 1965. This was the ultimate check and balance.

After you have done all this, listen to the song "Sixteen Tons" by Tennessee Ernie Ford and join the VERY small club that truly understands what has happened.

An absolutely brilliant side story in the Skulduggery universe

I admit: I expected this book to be fluffy fun, but considering that it's essentially a side story in the Skulduggery Pleasant universe, focusing entirely on secondary characters and not even featuring either Skulduggery or Valkyrie, my expectations were, well, somewhat limited.

Oh boy. Was I wrong.

I'd rank it as one of the very best of the entire SP series. It's shorter than the main series novels, yes, but being still novel-length, it fit in more than enough - plot, some excellent character stuff, back stories for several characters, lots of action and even a fair bit of romance (it even has a love triangle of sorts - something that tends to put me off in most cases, but this being a SP book, even that was awesome).

The feels. Oh, the feels this book gave me. Springheeled Jack in particular became a truly rounded, fully fleshed out character in this book, both terrifying and sympathetic at the same time. I loved the banter, both among the good guys and the bad guys. I enjoyed the action. I ... there are twists, towards the end, that I did not see coming. I freely admit that I came close to tears at one of them.

I'm terrified of Last Stand of Dead Men, now. Not that I wasn't before...

Also, like Kingdom of the Wicked last year, The Maleficent Seven is also very much more "adult" (well, young adult!) in nature than the earlier, middle-grade rated books in the series. Not so much in the levels of gore or violence - seasoned readers of the series shouldn't find any of that noticeably stronger than before - but there is some frank (not detailed!) discussion and mentions of various relationships the characters have or have had in the past, and the innuendo levels have been upped compared to the earlier books, too.

Note about the placement of this book in the series: it takes place after the events in Kingdom of the Wicked, which are referred to at times.

5th Grader Approved!

I LOVE this series!!! I read the first book to my fifth grade class each year and we all roll on the floor laughing at the wit and humor found within! My students then fight over the chance to finish reading the rest of the series, among themselves! My parents express their delight in watching, for the first time, a passion for reading in many of their children, as a result!

I love the Derek Landy chose to write a spin off with
Tanith Low! She is one of my favorite characters and I am anxious for her to be saved...SOON!!!

Read the book and the series I am sure you will not be disappointed!

A fun appetizer that could have been a main course

This book is spin off of the main series, that it isn't required reading to for the skulduggery Pleasant series. However they're are a few big plot developments, but they are explained in the next book for anyone who didn't read this one.
The story was good, and the characters were all unique and exciting. Though I felt this book could have been filled out more, and might have made a better novel than a novella, especially with all the characters.

About the Author

Raymond C. H. Lo

Raymond C. H. Lo is currently the CTO and cofounder of Meta (http://www.getameta.com), a company in Silicon Valley that is creating the world's first augmented reality eyeglasses with 3D gesture input and 3D stereoscopic display. This next-generation wearable computing technology, which is the result of his PhD research, has been featured extensively in news media, including CNN, MIT News, CNET, and Forbes magazine. During his PhD, Raymond worked with Professor Steve Mann, who is widely recognized as the father of wearable computing. Together, they published and presented papers at leading conferences, including the SIGGRAPH and IEEE conferences, on real-time high-dynamic-range (HDR) imaging, augmented reality, and digital eyeglasses, which involve high-performance computation using CUDA and visualization using OpenGL.

William C. Y. Lo

William C. Y. Lo is currently an MD-PhD candidate at Harvard Medical School. He is pursuing his PhD degree in the joint Harvard-MIT Medical Engineering and Medical Physics program under the guidance of Professor Brett Bouma (and co-advisor Professor Benjamin Vakoc) at Massachusetts General Hospital, who founded the NIH-funded Center for Biomedical OCT Research and Translation. He obtained his bachelor of applied science degree in computer engineering and his MSc degree in medical biophysics from the University of Toronto, where he worked with Professor Lothar Lilge and Professor Jonathan Rose on high-performance computing for photodynamic therapy planning using custom FPGA hardware and graphics processors with CUDA. He, along with J. Rose and L. Lilge, worked on Computational Acceleration for Medical Treatment Planning: Monte Carlo Simulation of Light Therapies Accelerated using GPUs and FPGAs, VDM Verlag, 2010.

Interesting Visualization Projects on Multiple Platforms

This is an excellent book that gets you up and running quickly on OpenGL including the fixed function pipeline (version 2), shaders (version 3) and embedded systems/Android (ES). I appreciated the coverage on various platforms (Android, Linux, Mac, Windows) as I was able to use on Ubuntu 15.04, Windows 7/10, and Yosemite.

The code depends on several open source libraries that jump start the projects to quickly see the reward for the effort. More importantly, the authors clearly explain why they are taking on the dependencies (GLEW for managing OpenGL extensions, GLFW for windowing, GLM for matrix math, SOIL for handling graphics formats, and OpenCV for imaging), I think most of these have fairly permissible licenses so you should be able to re-use without much concern (but I am an engineer and not a lawyer).

The content is in tutorial format so it is a good first read for someone starting with OpenGL without having to search across multiple web sites. You will want to have a good reference with you to satisfy any curiosities about API calls.

I was impressed with the examples that were more interesting than the standard tea pot and simple triangle renderings. Most of the content is generated programmatically through solution of math problems. While the math can be fairly sophisticated, the problems were focused on medicine and I found them relatable despite the fact that medicine is not my principle area of study (but I have a heart beat and the authors take the time to provide background information on what a heart beat plot should look like that was quite interesting).

Anyway, the recipes in the cookbook are related to computer imaging of data based on various mathematical models. You start by drawing a simple sine curve on a 2D plot and progress to 3D contour plots. Then, you will start integrating filters for image processing. There is also a recipe for working with the Microsoft Kinect 3D range sensing camera on Apple, Linux and Windows platforms. After that, there are recipes for rendering stereoscopic images but I did not have the hardware to test the images.

Overall, I am extremely pleased with the book as it quickly started my development across several platforms and saved me time and effort otherwise spent reading various web pages.

I struggle to find any criticism. It would be nice to have a recipe for selecting objects (perhaps polygons) with mouse clicks. You also will not find any iOS coverage (at least I did not come across any). Hope this will be in the second edition.

A very good book that covers 2D and 3D data visualization using OpenGL and other libraries, with setup instructions provided for developing applications for Windows, Linux, Mac and Android platforms.

The recipes provides in the book start with the basics, with rendering a rotating triangle and progressively move on to more advanced examples, including:
- a 2D electrocardiogram,
- interactively visualizing complex 3D data sets,
- rendering 2D images and videos with texture mapping and working with OpenCV libraries,
- working with GLSL,
- real-time video rendering with filters,
- rendering 3D point cloud data,
- rendering stereoscopic 3D models,
- creating augmented reality applications.

Very focused, complement other OpenGL books

Very interesting read. It nicely complement other OpenGL books as it focus exclusively on data visualization. Indeed this is one of the few books I am aware of dealing with this topic using OpenGL.
Another good point is given by the accompanying demo source code which runs on my platform of choice (Linux), unlike many other OpenGL books leaning more towards Windows.
In summary, if you are interested in data visualization and you already know enough of OpenGL, this book is worth the money.

Really fun, beautifully written, and hilarious!

This book by Patrick E. McLean was awesome. I listened to the audiobook narrated by the author. He is a fantastic narrator. His delivery of all the characters' lines were so good. He got the voice for the protagonist perfectly. The wizard and an interesting Orc character - I distinctly remember them all and they were unique and interesting voices that really brought the story alive and made the fantastic dialog shine. Now onto the story.

I really enjoyed the story. I was never bored, which sadly I can't say about many novels. First off, I love adventure stories. This was an adventure story that was very different. You can tell by the title. What? A merchant going on an adventure? Yes. But he's what you might expect from Patrick, a character who uses his brains and wit to get what he wants. He's not swinging a sword. He's not out for glory. He never set out to be a hero.

As much as I love fantasy for all its tropes, it was refreshing to read a story with a very different kind of protagonist. The wizard was a great character too. A bit of what we expect except when it comes to his personality. He was a fun antagonist.

Another great thing about this story is that I was never able to guess what was going to happen next. In a way that Boltak the main character might say it: "This ain't your ordinary fantasy adventure kid." Something else I liked was the prose. Usually it was snappy witty dialogue that had me laughing a lot. Sometimes, however, there were remarkable phrases elegantly describing things of beauty. More quiet moments where you weren't waiting for the next laugh but carefully reading or listening to each word. When you get to chapter 37 you'll see what I mean. Great writing. So I gave this novel a 5 star rating because it was a blast to read, had fantastic writing, and I'm really glad I gave it a go.

Snarky Fantasy? I. Love. It.

I don't know where to start. I have loved almost everything that has come from Patrick McLean. I saw this appear in a random search and thought 'this can't possibly be what I think it is!'
The stage for this book is set in a Medieval town where heros are more muscle than gray matter, and every cliche that you can think of is heaped upon them to hilarious effect. The knight is even wearing Shining (trademarked) Armor. I kid you not.
I laughed continuously for the first 50% of the book or so. The third quarter gets a little weighed down by philosophical questions about 'who is a hero' and 'what makes you happy' but recovers in fine form. The plot goes place you wouldn't quite think either. I don't want to spoil anything, but when the story takes turns they are out of left field.
The characters are what really makes this book though. You have your main character (who I can't even call a Hero) Boltac. He is a merchant who could be a combination of any number of stereotypes for shrewd merchants. You never, at any point dislike him though. As the story goes on though, it gets harder not to root for him. I have to mention Relan when talking about characters. Fantastic doesn't begin. He is a perfect foil for Boltac. Logic vs. idealism, logic vs. heroism, logic vs. idiotic bravery (you get the idea).
Pick this up. It is so well worth it.

I really enjoyed this satirical look at the Fantasy genre. It's the Galaxy Quest of fantasy novels. With really endearing characters that are self-aware and engaging. I would very much look forward to more adventures of the merchant adventurer.

I haven't enjoyed reading a book this much in a long time. It is thrilling, touching, frightening. It is about trust, love and fear. I wanted to know more about Puspha's life and just keep hearing about her insights and about India. It is a mix of Eat, Pray, Love and Shantaram in one book. I was hooked from the start and stayed that way through to the final word. If you're looking for something to read this summer, I definitely recommend this book :)
