Detailed Overview

Being interested in reading processes, especially in learned languages, this book came to me with some potential. It was potential largely fullfilled.

"Interactive Approaches" deals a lot with the theory, such as various models for reading, (the Stanovich Model gets a fair airing), but that is also counter-balanced with a great deal on the implications that are there for teaching. There is also some discussion on the reasearch that has been performed on readers and what the results have shown.

The book is a series of essays written by various people in the linguistics field, and they have some very interesting things to contribute.

In short, I have found their ideas and comments of immense value in my own studies. This would make a good reference book, though I am not sure anyone would want to read it from cover to cover. It is a good book that gets you into some of the more contemporary research on reading processes.

About the Author
James Rachels , the distinguished American moral philosopher, was born in Columbus, Georgia, graduating from Mercer University in Macon in 1962. He received his Ph.D. in 1967 from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He taught at the University of Richmond, New York University, the University of Miami, Duke University, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he spent the last twenty-six years of his caree. STUART RACHELS is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Alabama. He has revised several of James Rachels' books, including Problems from Philosophy (second edition, 2009) and The Right Thing to Do (fifth edition, 2010), which is the companion anthology to this book. Stuart won the United States Chess Championship in 1989, at the age of 20, and he is a Bronze Life Master at bridge. His website is www.jamesrachels.org/stuart.

A great text for intro level ethics courses

I use this book (in conjunction with _The Right Thing to Do_, edited by Rachels) as a text for an intro-level ethics course that I teach. I can't recommend it highly enough. Rachels is a sharp philosopher, as well as an interesting and lucid writer. In this book he covers all the basics (Divine Command Theory, Cultural Relativism, Subjectivism, Utilitarianism, Kant...), and does a fine job of drawing examples from applied ethics (gay rights, euthanasia, animal rights...) to illustrate the theories he discusses. This is not to suggest that you will find no fault with any of Rachels' arguments. I myself am less than satisfied with his criticisms of emotivism and Kantianism -- but all things considered, this a minor complaint. The book still deserves five stars. If you are teaching ethics at the college level and are looking for an introductory level text, suitable for students with no previous exposure to philosophy, this is the one -- I know of none better.

basic 20th century music

this is the original sheet music of thomas a. dorsey's gospel songs, the songs that launched an idiom. lots of the familiar gospel piano harmonic moves are contained in these scores. there are quite a few rare songs besides the hits (precious lord and peace in the valley). it's an amazing document that every musician should own.

Father of Gospel Music: Used for Southern and Black Gospel: My church used the book during Black History Month

Great to get a collection of Dorsey's compositions under one cover. Wonderful simple historic gospel songs that fully demonstrate the relationship between Southern and Black Gospel music. Dorsey wrote so many Southern Gospel tunes--"Peace In The Valley," "Precious Lord" "Evening Prayer: Have I Given Anything Today." We sang them all during Black History Month and used them as a fulcrum to balance and unite our multi-racial taste in gospel singing. The book exceeds its music in its usefulness and the music is great too yet very assessable to the intermediate musician. Blessings all around.
