It is an inquiry into the nature of a great medieval court, where various genres of poetry and prose were produced, performed, and evaluated regularly. Major aspects examined in the book are the patterns of patronage, selection, and auditioning; the cultural codes and norms governing performance, production, and criticism; the interaction between the patron and courtiers and among the courtiers themselves; competition; genres as productive molds; the hegemonic literary taste; and the courtly habitus. This book reveals the significance these courts held as institutions that were at the heart of literary production in Arabic.

Using primary medieval Arabic sources, this book offers a comprehensive analysis of Islamic courts and as such is of key interest to students and scholars of Arabic literature, Islamic history and medieval studies.

Good reference book

I had this book before and loaned it to a friend who never returned it. This is the same cover I had before too. I wanted to have it again to re-read and refer to points that Cayce had made regarding changes on Earth that were coming, which he saw while in a trance. Geologists have proven points he made and predictions as well. I was happy to get a good copy that was used back into my hands. This is a good book to have to see what other predictions Cayce made before his death and I would recommend it to anyone interested.

Thorough and complicated

I am a classically trained pianist, and I purchased this book to start learning to play jazz. It is certainly an excellent, thorough (and huge) repository for jazz theory, especially well-suited if you have a teacher whom you can pepper with questions along the way, or if you already have a thorough background of music theory (which I admit I didn't). For me, as a solitary jazz greenhorn, the book is not quite enough to help me box my way through jazz theory on my own. I guess I need to find myself something a bit more step-by-step, at least in the beginning, in order not to get demoralized.

90% duplication of Mark Levine's other Jazz book

I am writing this review to point out that Mark Levine publishes TWO Jazz theory books " The Jazz Theory Book (1995)" and "The Jazz Piano Book (1989)." Amazon shows incorrect dates for these books. I purchased both here on Amazon. To my suprise, the two books are virtually the same with frequent identical paragraphs of text, illustrations, chapters, etc. Jazz Theory Book is essentially an update version of Jazz Piano Book. Both are superior well written music theory works but it is not necessary to own both. Either one of them is a must have for any aspiring Jazz pianist or theory hound. I am keeping the Jazz Theory Book since it is newer. I feel that Amazon or someone should point this 'duplication' out.

I bought this book by Mark Levine, not knowing what to expect. I've been a professional musician for 44 years, but unfortunately, I gave up my jazz studies in 1977 when rock 'n' roll called. Now that I'm older, I'm getting back into my studies. Shortly after buying this book, I ordered Levine's earlier book, "The Jazz Piano Book", and after receiving it and reading through it, I found that was the book I should have ordered. Don't get me wrong - both books are "must haves", but "The Jazz Piano Book" starts out with II-V-I progressions as well as much needed studies on piano voicings, whereas "The Jazz Theory Book" is more of a "takeoff" of where "The Jazz Piano Book" leaves off. Buy them both...both are worth having for every pianist!...B. Norman

Aikido and the Harmony of Nature

I'm sorry to be the voice of dissent with my review but I found `Aikido and the Harmony of Nature' to be a disappointing read, maybe all the more so after reading the other glowing reviews here. This book looks at Aikido philosophy and links it into themes of nature. The premise sounds great but it struggles hard to actually do it in practise. You get lots of spurious illustrations of aikido throws with swirling arrows that spin around strands of DNA, atoms or solar flares (for example), but these bare little relevance to both the text or the philosophy itself. They look like they mean something and are deeply profound or spiritual, but on closer analysis they really aren't. Whilst it's true that the spherical motion of Aikido techniques can find a mirror in nature, this book struggles to tie them together in any coherent or meaningful way. There is also far too much talk of God (although Saotome does specify that he doesn't mean any particular God) and how Aikido links you with him when Aikido is a non religious martial art, although it is deeply spiritual. The sections that recount the authors training with O Sensei are fascinating to read and some of the philosophy makes for interesting reading, although it tends to ramble after a while. If you are looking for a book on Aikido philosophy then I'd suggest you start with the excellent `Spirit of Aikido' by Kisshomaru Ueshiba and then come to this one way, way down the line. Some interesting parts and some of the photography redeemed this book from being a total washout, but it could have delivered so much more.

Alright but mostly meh...

The art in this one was alright but didn't end up being worth it. Each picture is literally just two topless girls each with one punching the other. Actually,there's one picture where steam or something covers both girls making the picture's inclusion pointless. Also,calling it "Hentai Fight Club" feels kind of misleading considering "Hentai" implies sexual content and not just topless boxing. However, if you don't want something as extreme as hentai, this one might be for you.

About the Author
John Rutter was born in London in 1945 and studied music at Clare College, Cambridge. His compositions embrace choral, orchestral, and instrumental music, and he has edited or co-edited various choral anthologies, including four Carols for Choirs volumes with Sir David Willcocks and the Oxford Choral Classics series. From 1975 to 1979 he was Director of Music at Clare College, and in 1981 he formed his own choir, the Cambridge Singers. He now divides his time between composition and conducting and is sought after as a guest conductor for the world's leading choirs and orchestras.
