Sexy times

So, it's back to Hunter and Livy. I love these two. I like most of the secondary characters as well. And I have always had great love for an office romance, even if this one didn't start out in any sort of conventional way.

Hunter Carlisle has issues. We didn't really get into them in Yes, Please. In this chapter of Hunter and Livy's story, we get some insight into what the deal is with him. We've seen throughout the story so far, Livy trying to get in there. Being patient, while also not taking most of his guff. I love Livy. She's a strong character. Life has kind of beat her down a bit, but she never gives up. Hunter, he's kind of contradictory...for lack of a better word. Sometimes he's all business, take control. He's a big shot, running a large company, so you know he has to be smart and savvy. Then, when it comes to certain things in his life, I feel like he's allowing himself to be pushed around. For what? I'm not sure I completely understand yet. I'm sure it's coming, I just have to be patient. FYI, there is a bit more sexy times in Now, Please than there was in Yes, Please. There was one instance in this part of the story, where I felt that Livy should have made something a little less easy for Hunter, but you'll have to read it yourself and find out what I mean.

I can't wait to see what happens next. I'm hoping Hunter can finally be rid of the bad things he still allows to have part in his life. Maybe Livy can teach him a little something about that.

An Awesome Read!

I loved reading Now, Please (Please Series Book 2), all about Hunter Carlisle the gorgeous CEO & Olivia the twenty-two year old girl who now works for me & only signed one contract. Hunter took one look at Olivia and he knew he just had to have her, however she signed his employment contract but refused his personal contract and said no I don't want to work for you. Needless to say Hunter was stunned, so he changed the rule and said Olivia could work for him for one month and then they would revisit the two contracts after the month was up. The author wrote an incredible story, and the characters absolutely made the story come to life! In book one Olivia gets a one month shot at this admin position. In book two she's still working for Hunter and still only signed the employee contract, and they are flying by the seat of their pants over the personal issue! Read this series it will make you laugh, sigh, shake your head and cum up a storm! Read about Hunter & Olivia and fall in love with the both of them. Olivia is a normal run of the mill girl who loves her jeans & hoodies, and since meeting Hunter she has had to change her entire wardrobe! Follow these two and check out their adventures! I can't wait for book three!

I loved Yes, Please but Now, Please blew me away! There were so many unexpected twists and turns. I love the portrayal of the main character Livvy, and the way that she stuck to her roots in situations that she may have very easily changed just to fit in. I read this book in one day, because I couldn’t put it down. After reading the teaser for the third book, I think this series will be a huge hit for Summers!

A Classic of Contemporary Moral Philosophy

The first chapter of Mackie's Ethics: Inventing Right and Wrong is the locus classicus for error theories in contemporary meta-ethics. There he argues that ordinary moral discourse and thought involve an assumption that there are what he calls "objective values," and that this assumption is false. Consequently, ordinary moral thought and language are infected by an error that precludes any ordinary moral claims and thoughts from being true.
Mackie first argues for a cognitivist interpretation of moral language. In other words, he argues that ordinary moral claims purport to describe facts about the world. In particular, ordinary moral language and thought purport to describe facts about objective moral values. What are objective moral values? They have two defining characteristics: (i) mind-independent existence (think of how chairs, trees, people, and electrons exist), and (ii) "intrinsic and categorical prescriptivity": that is, they are such that the mere apprehension of them will motivate a person to act in a certain way. The former characteristic is the source of their objectivity; the latter is the source of their normativity.
But, he claims, we have good reason to think that no such things exist. Mackie's fundamental worry about these putative objective values is that these things are especially "queer," that they are unlike any other things we have good reason to think exist. As I understand Mackie, underlying his worries about the queerness of these putative entities is his perception of a tension in their nature. He appears to believe that the objectivity of these putative entities is in tension with their intrinsic and categorical action-guidingness. That is, it is unclear to Mackie how something that exists as a mind-independent part of reality could have the sort of influence on human behavior that these objective values are supposed to have. It is unclear how something could be both objective and normative. The things that scientists study and that we encounter in the everyday world simply don't have this sort of categorical action-guidingness built into them. So, given the naturalistic conception of the world that Mackie favors, we have good a posteriori reasons to doubt the existence of objective moral values.
But, if Mackie is correct about the nature of ordinary moral thought and language, this commits us to regarding ordinary moral thought and language as involving a very fundamental sort of error, an error of presupposing that objective moral values exist. Mackie then completes his error theory by providing an explanation of our tendency to make this error, to mistakenly suppose that ordinary moral thought and language involve our successfully coming to know about the sorts of things he claims don't exist.
Mackie's book doesn't end here, however. Indeed, this is only the first chapter, and Mackie goes on to cover a wide range of territory in normative ethics and meta-ethics, along with a few issues in metaphysics (the existence of God and freedom of the will) that have some bearing on moral issues. In fact, despite his worries about the objectivity of morality, Mackie goes on to defend a substitute for morality, one that looks quite a bit like a broadly consequentialist moral theory, and he even weighs in on several controversial moral issues that are still with us. In short, in a little over two hundred pages of exceptionally clear prose, Mackie covers just about everything of interest in moral philosophy.
This book is, of course, essential reading for anyone interested in meta-ethics. Understanding some of the material and its importance may require some background knowledge, but enough of the book is more generally accessible that it also constitutes a good wide-ranging introduction to issues in both meta-ethics and normative ethics for a person with some background in philosophy (and perhaps for the general reader). Furthermore, the book, while not a work of history, is sufficiently informed about the history of the issues it discusses to provide the reader with an entry into study of the history of the subject.
If you're especially interested in Mackie's meta-ethical views, you should attempt to track down a copy of Morality and Objectivity (Ted Honderich, ed.), as it includes interesting and important reactions to Mackie's views by some major names (John McDowell, Simon Blackburn, R. M. Hare, Bernard Williams, et al.) in moral philosophy.

A Classic of 20th Century Ethics Indeed...

It might be read as an introduction to Ethics, but it isn't one. It is rather one of the most important works in 20th century ethics.

Mackie's book was revolutionary since being the first one to combine anti-realism (no objectively prescriptive values in the world) with cognitivism (the meaning of ethical statements can be true or false). Most of the previous anti-realists were anti-realists mostly implicitly, only because of being non-cognitivsts. Mackie has a different view which in my opinion is much more closer to the truth. The book also contains his error theory (people have a disposition to see their value judgments as objective). While the reviewer cdtreyer as the mainstream tradition have concentrated on Mackie's error theory I think it is much less important than the denial of the objective values and the justification of the role of morality in quasi-contractual terms.

Mackie's views on positive morality are justified by quasi-contractual (he discusses Plato's Protagoras, Hobbes and Hume) means and would combine very well with evolutionary perspectives. The discussion on the content of normative views is just a brief sketch, but this isn't really what this book is about anyway. Anyone who claims that the contents of the first part of the book undermine the contents of the second should read chapter 5 again and again and again. That there are no objective values in the world does not mean that there can't be right or wrong - it simply must be (or rather already has largely been) invented and constructed.

If you are interested in ethics you simply need to read this small, but important book which, while not being an introduction is still quite simple and very elegantly written. Besides the main content you will also get to read a great discussion on the meaning of the good (in debate with the classical Geach-Hare discussion found in Philippa Foot's "Theories of Ethics"), discussion on the is-ought problem and its flawed Searlean solution (also found in Foots collection), a chapter on univerzalisability of moral judgments (contra Hare) and on the frontiers of ethics: voluntary actions, determinism, law, politics, religion.

Father of Error Theory

This book is the father of all error theory books. He originates some of the central critiques of moral thought and discourse that guys like Richard Garner rely on (see also: Beyond Morality). They think there is something bizarre about morality's commitment to categorical reasons (things that you ought or ought not to do regardless of what your desires happen to be). They think moral properties are queer because he says that don't fit into a naturalistic worldview and because they are thought to supervene on non-moral properties (i.e. the moral properties "fix" the moral facts... so the non-moral fact of kicking a puppy is always accompanied by the property of wrongness).

As you may notice, the theory presented in this book does not agree with me. Error theory argues that morality is systemically erroneous... what do we do with moral thought and discourse then? If Mackie thinks supervenient relationships are flawed, exactly how do ordinary natural facts determine the moral facts? He argues for conservationism (rather than eliminativism) because he recognizes the instrinsic vlue of morality, although I don't see that working. I agree more with the ideas of David Boonin, David Enoch, and Michael Huemer.

Great book for anyone serious about learning the Salesforce Platform

I was excited when I saw this book popup on Amazon. I was even more excited when I started to read it. I've spent the last six years in the Salesforce ecosystem, and reading this book is like talking to that really good developer you hope you'll be able to hire for your team. Carefully eschewing any rehash of the existing API documentation, Appleman focuses instead on what it takes to create robust, broadly useful code. I was particularly interested in chapter 10, Designing for Packages, when I picked it up, and I was not disappointed. There are a ton of great tips that advanced developers everywhere will find helpful. The rest of the book, which I worked through on the flight out to Dreamforce 12, was just as enlightening. THANK YOU, Dan, for writing this book. You are advancing the state of the art!!

Good supplement to Salesforce documentation

I've read a good deal of the book and it covers some key programming concepts that are spread out through blogs, the developerforce wiki, and the docs. For instance, the static variables stuff is covered in multiple places on the web. A lot of the stuff about Limits is also covered on the web, but, again, you have do a number of searches to get the information conglomerated in a single, digestable piece.

So, the book is a very good collection of information that is sometimes new info and sometimes exists in other places. I think for that reason it is highly valuable. It's a real timesaver, and I recommend it for that reason.

I would give it 5 stars if the print version had an index. The book has a TOC but no index.

I looked for this book at brick and mortar stores (sorry Amazon), but it is a print-to-order to book. So, if you order it from B&N, they have to first print it, and then they have to ship it. So, you might as well just get it from Amazon. I'm telling you this so that you know that you probably won't be able to get it any faster than Amazon can get it to you.

This book is an excellent resource for anyone looking to improve their Apex development skills, either from the perspective of building applications for individual customers or for developing packages for the Salesforce AppExchange. I found the patterns presented for trigger handling and asynchronous processing particularly interesting, while the chapter on limits should be mandatory reading for all Apex developers!

Tatian: Early Gnostic Christian Apologist and Heresiarch

The Text: Tatian's Oration to the Greeks is an eloquent, terse and compelling piece of Christian apologetic literature, charged with a polemical impetus not unworthy of the spirit of his teacher, St Justin. In the Oration, defense of doctrine is not Tatian's main objective; his assault is waged, instead, upon pagan philosophy and culture. Thus, in the Oration, Tatian takes the offensive and ridicules the pagan deities, shows no toleration to Greek philosophers and the multitidude of their opinions (something Justin would not have approved) and exposes the enormities of the stage and the brutality of the arena. One of the most fascinating aspects of the Oration, not counting his sonorous eloquence, is Tatian's formulation of perhaps the first systemized demonology in patristic literature. Tatian tells us it was the Logos that fashioned the angels; he gave them material bodies, being of an "airy" or "fiery" substance, animated with spirit. The first angel to defect from goodness seduced ranks of other angels with "illusions," to which they imitated and thus became a "host of demons (ch 7)." Through the agency of matter, the demons deceive men with like "illusions," drawing them down to a material existence and inciting them to create idols of beasts, for instance, which not surprisingly correspond to their ferocious, demonic and animalistic natures. Also, demons do not just allot fates, but they are the creators of Fate itself, since fate is completely divorced from Divine Providence. And Tatian calls the "life" of demons this: "while living they practice the ways of death, and die themselves as often as they teach their followers to sin." Overall, Tatian, despite his heretical leanings (which will be discussed at length below), fits comfortably in the great caste of 2nd century Christian apologists, with St Justin Martyr and Athenagoras the Athenian. The Oration to the Greeks will be a rewarding read to anyone hoping to broaden their understanding of Christianity in the sub-apostolic era.

Tatian's Life and Legacy: Tatian of Nisibis (110-177 AD), once an initiate of the Eleusinian mysteries, converted to Christianity in the middle of the 2nd century while at Rome. He tells us that in Rome he "met with certain barbaric writings [the Holy Scriptures]" which were "too old for the opinions of the Greeks, and too divine to be compared with their errors." Upon reading the Scriptures, Tatian was moved by their genuineness of style, by the veracity of the prophets, by the excellent moral precepts and by the concept of the providential governance of the world by a single God (Oration to the Greeks, ch. 29). As the reward of his conversion, while at Rome, he became a pupil of St Justin Martyr and reaped the fruits of that great teacher's labors. However, the martyrdom of Justin signaled a drastic turn in the direction of Tatian's faith. St Jerome remarked that Tatian was "distinguished as long as he did not leave his master's side. But afterwards, inflated by a swelling eloquence, he founded a new heresy...the Encratites (Illustrious Men, 29.)." And Clement of Alexandria, (Stromatasies, ch. 1) remembers that he was privileged to hear Tatian's "vigorous and animated discourses," but later in the same work, Clement denounces him for his heresies.

This novel Encratitic heresy was the child of his extravagant ascetic practices, and doctrinally, they were product of mutations which Tatian contrived from the catholic teachings of St Justin. (1.) Thus, Tatian preached against the sanctity of Christian wedlock, (2.) he bound members of his sect to absolute abstention from meat and wine, (3.) he believed that God utterly stripped Adam of the "image and likeness of God," seeming to place Adam beyond the hope of redemptive grace. (4.) Tatian also littered heaven with the Gnostic "Aeons" and held to the Docetic Christology, which understood Christ's body to be "phantom-like," not actual flesh. (4.) Moreover, he anticipated Arius by viewing Logos and Spirit to be graded emanations of the Father, envisioning them as personified abstractions of the Father, instead of recognizing the consubstantial unity of the tripartite persons of the Godhead. Ultimately, Tatian's break with the Universal Church is clearly implied at the close of his Oration where he states "I present myself to you...concerning my doctrines." Here he is obviously not pointing to those teachings and practices that were handed to him by way of Justin and tradition, but of those he independently constructed.

However, we would do Tatian an injustice not to highlight his virtues and vindicate him for his sincere religious fervor, even as unorthodox as he was. It must be considered that many famous early Christians took to the straying path. Great ones indeed, like the sublime Origen and the venerable Tertullian--father of ecclesiastical Latin--also lapsed, not being immune to the deleterious novelties they imbibed. In Tatian's case, had he not imposed his strict ascetic on others and made following them a general norm, he would have been a paragon of late antique virtue and his memory would not have been so darkened. Yet his light, shining out from the past into the present, is his immortal contribution to Christian scholarship, the Diatessaron. In principle, the work is a harmonization, or amalgamation, of the four canonical Gospels, not a critical comparison of them. Although, this was an unprecedented feat, owing to the fact that the Diatessaron was the first "life of Christ" at a time when there was no established canon to date. Ultimately, his scholarship left an indelible mark upon considerations which impacted the formation of the canon.
