About the Author
As the author of landmark chemistry books and textbooks, Donald McQuarrie's name is synonymous with excellence in chemical education. From his classic text on Statistical Mechanics to his quantum-first tour de force on Physical Chemistry, McQuarrie's best selling textbooks are highly acclaimed by the chemistry community. McQuarrie received his PhD from the University of Oregon, and is Professor Emeritus from the Department of Chemistry at the University of California, Davis. He makes his home at The Sea Ranch in California with his wife Carole, where he continues to write and enjoy life.

The standard, but maybe not the best

McQuarrie's book is typically the standard text in many undergraduate and graduate programs, but I believe there are many other resources to learn statistical mechanics in a much clearer way.
I find the following things to be particularly annoying about the book:
1) The typesetting! The pages are very difficult to read, especially equations. It's a very old typeface and my eyes literally hurt after reading McQuarrie for too long.
2) Very few problems are worked out. Many important concepts that should involve more detailed discussion are simply left as exercises to the student. I believe that more peripheral results and extensions of fundamental material are better left as problems, as opposed to fundamental results.
3) The glaring absense of good discussion on spin systems (such as Ising magnets) and critical phenomena. These are VERY important topics in modern statistical mechanics.
I would recommend the following if you want to find good books on statistical mechanics:
1) If you want one comprehensive volume, use Linda Reichl's book.
2) If you are only interested in statistical thermodynamics, use David Chandler's book.
3) If you want both statistical thermodynamics and nonequatilibrium statistical mechanics, use Chandler and Robert Zwanzig's book.
Also, Kubo's statistical thermodynamics book is really good.
I really would not recommend McQuarrie. Save your eyes and get a more modern book with at least a better typesetting.

Classical textbook.

I have found this book to be an excellent resource during my PhD and postdoctoral studies in molecular simulations. It is concise, rigorous and spans the classic problems in statistical mechanics more thoroughly than any other text. The development of the central axioms and theorems and connection with macroscopic thermodynamics is quite enlightening.
I have studied the sections on: foundations, perfect gases, imperfect gases, crystals and liquids. The book also covers kinetic theory, reactions and more.
The book is necessarily concise and therefore is a bit difficult as a first course. However a diligent graduade student could conceivably "slog" through it and would later come to appreciate the rewards. For a cheaper alternative, turn to the other classic of this field by T. L. Hill.

Maybe good for a reference, but not the best first source

I am a engineering/physics student, and I used this book for a first year graduate course in statistical mechanics. The book contains a lot of information, and the chapters are extremely concise. In this, lies both the strengths and weaknesses of the book. I think that the short, too the point writing style makes this book an excellent reference. However, the relatively small amount of exposition made it hard to learn material for the first time from the book. Overall, I would not suggest this book as a first introduction to the subject. But i think that it could be a usefull reference for someone with some background in the subject.

Fascinating exploration of why we wear what we do

The terrifying thing is that I remember many of these seemingly bizarre and archaic dress restrictions from my own youth in America, a decade after the end of this study which covers the 1920s and 1930s in Britain. Even in Illinois, one did not go out without gloves and a hat. Shoes had to match handbags or you were obviously too poor or too unaware to be taken seriously. The number of buttons on a man's sports coat or jacket was as much a cause of violence among teens as wearing the wrong gang colors. Clothing has always been a way of distinguishing afinity groups, and, as revealed in this wonderful book, in few places more rigidly and with such serious consequences as in Britain between the wars.

Horwood's research is exhaustive, but never numbing. The personal indignities and tragedies of not being able to wear the "correct" clothing are told with humor and poignancy. I recall similar ploys in my starving secretarial days in NYC, trying to appear to be in the next job category up by wearing "suit skirts," pretending I had left the jacket on the back of my chair. (Of course, only the upper echelon women wore hats all day in the office, their badge of having "made it" out of the typing pool.)

"Keeping Up Appearances" is a rich, wonderful tale of the fierce emotions and consequences attached to mere body coverings. Laughs, tears, and a greater understanding of the irrational complexities of what we like to call "civilization."

In this welcome, rational appraisal, the author sheds light upon influences, goals and themes of Cummings' verse by explicating in detail 25 of the poet's finest works (many of which have never been closely examined). Lane objectively assesses Cummings' strengths and weaknesses. Though an overview of Cummings' work and philsophy emerges, a complete reading of the book is attained only through great concentration due to its stiff organization (one explication after another--25 times). The book's primary value, therefore, would seem to lie in its use as a reference tool for the close examination of a few particular poems. Although scholars should be rewarded by Lane's insight, general readers (even those with a genuine interest in Cummings) may not have the patience to wait for enlightenment to intensify their intrigue.

Jonah Marriott borrowed money from Lydie Pearson's father.
Lydie's mother contacts her and lets her know they are about to loose their family home, because Jonah never repaid the loan. Lydie's mother is in need of a bi--h slap.
Although very shy, Lydie works up the nerve and she goes to see Jonah.
She confonts him about the loan, Jonah knows the loan was repaid long ago, but he gives Lydie the check for the amount she asked for + interest.
Lydie puts the check in the bank as Jonah told her to do.
Then when her father finds out about it. He is ticked, it seems he can't pay Jonah back the money.
Lydie goes back to Jonah, saying it's his fault.
He agrees, but now how will she pay him back.
Jonah finds away. he firstes a date with Lydie and then they become engaged.
Lydie wants more than just his need to please and keep her father safe, she wants Jonah' love.
Jonah loves her from the time he sees her 5 years after first meeting her
