Splendid Fifth in the Series

I recommend D.S. Butler’s procedural series and the author’s latest work featuring DS Jack Mackinnon and a returning cast in Deadly Ritual. Any of the novels can be enjoyed separately out of order, but you should review the previous books as they are all first rate. If Butler writes it, I'll read it.

The first four novels leaned heavily on Butler’s technical background as a clinical chemist. This newest work is not as science oriented but is still somewhat arcane. It combines an African immigrant spiritual element, ritualized murders and very serious child endangerment challenges.

As usual, Butler does not mess about. The prose is fast-paced and nicely edited . . . nothing much to quibble about in the presentation. I would highly recommend Butler’s series and this volume for fans of UK police procedurals that are looking for entertainment with somewhat less salty language and over-the-top sex and violence. Again, if Butler writes it, I’ll read it. You too are likely to become a fan . . . five stars.

Not Up to Expectations

For some reason, this mystery didn't come alive for me. I have read the other books in the series and appreciated each as a good read, cleverly plotted with interesting main characters. Even the characters that I previously liked - Chloe and Jack particularly - fell flat this time out. There was no tension in solving the mystery which surrounded, perhaps, Voodoo, perhaps some combination of that and another cult. I didn't buy that nor did the justification for the murders seem plausible. The new character, Alfie, who was central to the mystery, wasn't more than a stereotypical preteen. I didn't even cotton onto the fact that he was black (hence the likelihood of Voodoo?) until well into the story. So, while this was a disappointment, I will give the next in the series - if there is one - a try since the major fault was with this particular plot.

The British Queen of police procedurals!

In numerous reviews, I have said that the Brits write the best police procedurals. Tim Ellis and Bill Rogers are in the running for King, but no female I have read edges out Butler. The Brits are so good that there are three or four Americans writing British style police procedurals, the most noted being Preston Child (see Ice Station Wolfenstein). This author name is a combo of Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, American coauthors of the famous Pendergast series.

Butler's books are all spot on when it comes to having a plot and characters that are believable and well defined and developed. The killers are brutal and difficult to catch, but catcher they get. This is her fifth book and I recommend you read them all. Enjoy!

As a ceramic artist and educator who has occasion to work with those in the architecture and design fields, this book is highly effective as both a primer to new technologies and as a teaching tool. The respective approach to the complexities of the ceramic medium is key to provide accurate information of an ancient material used in a quickly changing world of technological applications. The authors have, themselves, "gotten their hands dirty" through using ceramics in their own research as well as in the classroom and this shows in the clear and concise overview of the exciting role ceramics plays in contemporary architecture and interior design.

Wonderfully written book.

This is from the my perspective as a basic research scientist and sometimes informal hiker and naturalist who never took zoology or botany too seriously, but on a whim wanted to know more about plant evolution.

This is a wonderful book. It is engagingly written, and more importantly isn't a litany of facts, but rather discusses the topic in the context of biomes, geology, and the evolutionary solutions reached by plants.

One small modification would be useful. Although the book is remarkably jargon free a few more terms in the glossary would have been useful to the non specialist. This said, as a non-specialist I read this book cover to cover and highly enjoyed it.

Fossil plants

This is a user friendly sized book reviewing the evolution of plants. The oldest plants are found in rocks 3,500 million years old, the stromatolites and prokaryotes. From that beginning the book describes the evolution of the mosses and ferns, and the living trees with the longest geologic history: Cycads, and Ginkgos. The rest of the book describes the evolution of Gymnosperms and Angiosperms and flowering plants.

Well written and comprehensive, but not encyclopedic. I enjoyed reading and refering to it.

A well explained evolution of plants linked with the major enviroment changes ocurred along Earth history. You end up learning alot of botanical concepts and undestanding the different evolutionary reasons which led to the diversity of extant plants. Very interesting.

Reinventing Rose - lots of fun!

With the characteristic humour which fans of Shepherd's previous award-winning and best-selling novels have come to love, Reinventing Rose tells the tale of a newly divorced school teacher from Bookerville, California. After having met her internet lover Scott offline for outrageously good sex, Rose buys a ticket and flies to Sydney to hook up once more with her handsome Aussie hunk. It's the start of the US summer school holidays and she's giving her adventurous side full rein. On arrival, however, she discovers Scott's not only married, but also his wife has a baby. He's a "love rat" of the first order, and only too happy to get rid of Rose before she even leaves the airport.

Scott's betrayal isn't the only unwelcome discovery Rose makes as we follow her adventures "down under". Her struggles to reinvent herself as a stranger in a strange land, however, are made a whole lot easier - and funnier! - by her outgoing Aussie flatmates, botoxed beauty editor Carla and artist-cum-trust-fund heiress Sasha, as well as their fiercely independent neighbour and friend, international model Kelly. These girls - women - are drawn with flair and deserve to star in books of their own.

Happy read!

I read this book while recovering from painful dental work. It was a perfect distraction. Rose needs a makeover after a disastrous long distance love affair, but she gets more than just a physical makeover is this charming book. I loved the Sydney setting seen through the eyes of an American and the camaraderie between Rose and her flatmates. The writer has a wonderful comic turn of phrase and clearly knows her way around beauty products! A fun, happy read but not without addressing some serious issues facing contemporary women.

Fun and Heartwarming

This is another wonderful story from Kandy Shepherd whose books always leave me feeling uplifted. Rose is a very likeable character as are the women who help her on her journey to becoming her real self. The men she meets aren't half bad either! There's a nice complexity to the plot and I was sorry when the story finished. Would love to read more of Rose or her friends we meet in this story.
